Sorrento Music

Music

Classical and jazz concerts take place from April to November in a number of venues in and around Sorrento. These include the Cloister of St Francis in Sorrento, Villa Fondi in Piano di Sorrento, Villa Angelina in Massa Lubrense and the Cathedral of Lauro in Meta di Sorrento.

Elsewhere on the Amalfi coast is the Ravello Music Festival, which includes the Wagner Festival in the breath-taking setting of Villa Rufolo Gardens and Auditorium high above the Bay, see video. Concerts are performed here from April to November and there is also a Chamber music festival at St. Rose Convent in Conca dei Marini town.

On Ischia, La Mortella Gardens, owned by the Sir William Walton Trust, is the venue for recitals and concerts from April to August.

Jazz festivals take place in Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi and Minori, a town on the coast overlooked by Ravello.

Neapolitan music with traditional costumes and dancing can be enjoyed at Sorrento’s Teatro Tasso and in the summer months dance troupes perform traditional dances in a number of different venues.

The song Torna a Surriento (Come back to Sorrento) has helped keep the town in the minds of people throughout the world. Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti not only sung about Sorrento but also stayed there. The Excelsior Vittoria Hotel has a suite named after Caruso and there is also a museum/restaurant close to the Piazza Tasso dedicated to him.

More contemporary and modern music can be found in a number of establishments such as the Square in Sorrento and hotels. Tango festivals often take place in Capri, Ischia and Salerno.

In Naples there is of course a wide selection of musical and cultural attractions throughout the year and the San Carlo Opera House has a seasonal programme of opera, ballet and concerts. Watch this video for the 2015/16 season to get a flavour of what you could enjoy during your visit.
