transport in the Neapolitan Riviera

by land

In this article we look at the transport options for travelling around the Neapolitan Riviera and Amalfi Coast.

If driving a Ferrari through Naples and along the Amalfi coast is your idea of relaxation, you can hire one. For those who prefer to be a passenger and driven in style, it is possible to hire all types of luxury cars on a daily basis, and with drivers who have the local knowledge to ensure you miss nothing. Ideal for visiting Naples or to see an evening concert in Ravello when no public transport is available.

Private cultural tours can also be organised with car, driver and an expert guide in your field of interest.

Alternatively, organised half or full day excursions can take you to the main historic sites and along the Amalfi Drive. These can be booked directly with the organisers in Italy or pre-booked in the UK with Meravigliare's Transfer & Personal Tour service.
The Amalfi Drive

Public transport is excellent, with buses and trains offering regular and efficient services to local villages and main towns. The Circumvesuviana railway line between Sorrento and Naples offers a particularly convenient way of getting to Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The islands of Ischia and Capri also provide regular bus services from the harbours. On Capri there is also the funicular railway from the harbour up to the town of Capri itself.

For more detailed information on public transport see useful links.

by sea

Boats of all kinds, power and sailing, with or without a captain or crew, are available to explore, at your leisure, the Amalfi coastline and its islands. You can anchor offshore to swim, dive and fish, or discover a secluded cove for sunbathing and take a picnic.

Quite often there are events and activities taking place in the evenings on Capri, which start after the last ferry has sailed. Hiring a private boat and captain gives you the opportunity not to miss such events and to enjoy seeing the night lights of the coastline.

The harbours at Sorrento and Naples operate a range of regular ferry services to Capri, Ischia and Procida throughout the year, subject to sea conditions.
Sailing in the Neapolitan Riviera

In the summer there are additional services to towns along the Amalfi coast, including Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and Salerno etc.,

Throughout the summer you can join a mini cruise which take you along the Amalfi coastline, stopping for a swim or putting you ashore at Positano or Amalfi and picking you up later.

by air

Helicopter services provide the opportunity not only to shorten journey times to places like Rome for sightseeing or shopping, but also to see the beauty of the Riviera from a different perspective.

Fly over the crater of Vesuvius, the ruins of Pompeii, or the islands of Capri and Ischia. These and other experiences are available to you.
